The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway is a breathtaking 24‑mile paved drive winding through the Wasatch Mountains, linking American Fork Canyon to Provo Canyon along Utah State Route 92. Beginning at roughly 5,000 ft elevation, the road climbs to the canyon crest at about 8,000 ft, offering sweeping views of Mount Timpanogos the second‑highest peak in the range at 11,752 ft, with rocky limestone summits that gleam under Utah’s alpine sun.
Designed in the mid-20th century as State Route 80 and renumbered SR‑92 in 1977, this byway carries a rich legacy. Along the way, travelers pass by the historic Timpanogos Cave National Monument, Cascade Springs, and Sundance Resort, and enjoy glimpses of glacier-sculpted peaks and lush forest landscapes. Seasonal closures in winter pause traffic as early as late October and typically reopen in late spring, preserving the pristine alpine environment.
